7/28/2014 - Let's talk about UNWRA

Dear Family and Friends:

I could not sleep tonight thinking about the possibility that Israel would accept any type of truce possibility by Kerry and his misguided approach to the Middle East.  I do not have the time to figure out his agenda with Qatar and Turkey but let's just say things are fishy.  I was actually shocked that the U.S., in the middle of this whole mess, would sign its biggest weapons deal of the year with...ready for this: Qatar. $11 billion!  http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=122668.  U.S. policy people got to be smoking weird stuff.  I know about our bases there and how Qatar outsources their defense, primarily, to the U.S. and the Brits (see military - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatar%E2%80%93United_States_relations). And they have tons of money and gas but damn -- they are the #1 supporter of Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood and 2. they run the biggest pro-Islamic news and propaganda agency in the world, Al Jazeera http://www.aljazeera.com/ .  Shit. $11 Billion.  Doesn't that make you angry?  I sure am.  Write your congressman and senators and tell them this is a horrible deal.

But wait, could it be that Kerry is somehow connected to this?  Just because you're not paranoid  doesn't mean the State Department and political echelons of the DOD aren't out to help Qatar at the expense of Israel.  And the rabidly anti-Semitic (sorry, anti-Zionist) pro-MB/Hamas Erdoğan of Turkey is the other cook in the kitchen here.  So I can't sleep.  I believe, reading from commanders at the field level in this battle, that Hamas is reeling. Now is the time to shut Hamas down.  Bibi, I know you are not reading this blog so I am just sending out love vibes to you to NOT STOP. Lastly, you know that Kerry is up to no good when even Lefty defense correspondent for Haaretz, Barak Ravid, starts sounding like our Foreign Minister saying that Kerry has "gone off the deep end": https://drive.google.com/a/arizal.biz/file/d/0B4_jLzgwVn7dY1RmalY4TG0zdjA/edit?usp=sharing
And here is one more take on Kerry's betrayal. Hell, even Abbas is upset at Kerry. Imagine that!
http://www.timesofisrael.com/john-kerry-the-betrayal/

Just a quick note on these "attack tunnels".  You know, there is a joke in Israel making the rounds  that we should hire Hamas to dig the tunnels for our new high-speed train between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem (right now the Chinese are doing this). Hamas has to be cheaper because -- get this -- they were using CHILD LABOR as part of their effort to dig the tunnels and there is one source that claims over 160 kids have DIED in this effort.  (http://www.tabletmag.com/scroll/180400/hamas-killed-160-palestinian-children-to-build-terror-tunnels#undefined). I don't know how he figures this out when it seems Israel was pretty much asleep at the switch regarding these tunnels.  Amazing energy and resources were being poured into these things (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4550063,00.html) and - and please hear this - had Hamas executed on their plan of a simultaneous attack on multiple towns (the current thought is that they were planning this operation with hundreds of terrorists for the upcoming Jewish New Year, Rosh haShannah, in 2 months) it would have been a mass casualty event with magnitude similar to the opening of the Yom Kippur war. (http://israelmatzav.blogspot.co.il/2014/07/what-hamas-planned-to-do-with-terror.html) http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/4516/hamas-mega-attack  Come to think of it, Arabs do like to attack us on our Jewish Holidays - kind of racist.  Anyway, as  one interview with an IDF special unit demonstrates, we cannot stop now. (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4550063,00.html).

It is clear that Hamas spent $100's of millions building this sophisticated tunnel network, based upon consultations with North Korea, Iran and Hezbollah.  The complete absurdity is that the international community does not want to consciously deal with this major shift of resources away from nation building for the sole purpose to kill Jews -- demonstrating a clear rationale why there was an embargo of Gaza of building material to begin with.  Daaah. I can only think of one other event in recent memory that parallels the willingness of a society to invest in killing Jews at the expense of their national initiative and that is the misdirection of critical war resources by Hitler in order to build concentrations camps, invest in transportation systems and allocate human resources to eliminate the Jews.  It seem irrational unless one considers that, in the end, these types of organizations consider ideology of Jew hatred their most significant national goal.  Or maybe Hamas will tell the gullible world they were just building a new Gaza subway system.  I am sure CNN can make this into a human interest story!

Related to what I just said and focused on the use of Gaza citizens as human fodder, you should please send around this video to your friends. It is an interview with a Isreali special forces officer showing a booby trapped home next to a UNRWA school. I am not sure why this is not captioned in English or why the cameras are not from CNN or BBC. I hope this changes in the next few days.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=0fze6qHvzgQ

I wanted to focus this piece on the topic of "refugees" and UNRWA.  You know, I saw this news piece the other day declaring that 70-80 percent of the Gaza strip are refugees from Israel's War of Independence.  This type of crap gets passed around without much a "really, that was almost 70 years ago and I thought the median age in Gaza today is 18 years? (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/fields/2177.html)"  How is this even possible?  Good question, no?  So how do we have five, yes, 5 million of Palestinian "refugees" running around claiming their "right of return" when there are  only 30-50,000 alive today from that conflict and not much more from 1967 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_refugee and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Relief_and_Works_Agency_for_Palestine_Refugees_in_the_Near_East)? The magic of politics at its most perverse level.  Obviously, we are talking about descendents.  The total number of Arabs who fled, enticed to run away by their leaders and, yes, kicked out (that happened when the Arab world invaded the new, U.N.-approved Jewish State) were no more than 720,000 (some sources show this number to be inflated and it is closer to 600,000 and there were about 145,000 new refugees created by the 1967 war).  In fact, more Jews fled or were expelled from Arab countries during this same time but you don't have any camps or special UN bodies for them because they were absorbed and live as full citizens in Israel.

So how do we get these crazy numbers?  You are going to learn something here that will make you sick and you will realize how MANUFACTURED this refugee issue is -- specifically manufactured by the Arab world and their allies with majority control of the U.N.  to create an issue that, over the long term,is intended to discredit and destroy Israel. I must tell you that most of my American and Israeli friends have no idea about this.  And what is especially galling is the fact that the refugee organization at the UN for ALL OTHER refugees (except Israel), which is called UNHCR,  defines a refugee as only that person who is displaced (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_High_Commissioner_for_Refugees) and NOT their descendents?  Crazy, no? A total parallel universe was set up just for one group of refugees and one group only -- Palestinians. And while all other refugees are supposed to be "resettled" as quickly as possible, only UNWRA Palestinians are not to be resettled and have a ridiculous "right of return". NO OTHER REFUGEE GROUP IN THE WORLD HAS THIS RIGHT.  NO ONE.

So what UNRWA did, as part of this anti-Israel policy (and also to create a co-dependent society with no hope except to return to Israel) was to redefine Palestinian refugees as multi-generational and change the re-settlement policy to a maintenance policy.  Now you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand what is going on here.  The Arab countries and their numerous allies were creating a core issue that they hoped would kill Israel in the long term.  But I must tell you that Israel has also been complicit since it needed an "address" to deal with this problem and hence it supported UNRWA over the years along with the U.S. (which is the biggest financier of UNRWA). So we have been part of the problem and this travesty has to stop because the unintended (actually intended by our enemies) consequence is a 5 million person bow-wave of "refugees" who have been told, for 67 years, that they will get a chance to go "home". And they are pissed that they haven't yet gotten the keys to my house in Rosh Pina.

Now just to put things in perspective, WW II and it's aftermath (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_evacuation_and_expulsion) as well as the creation of a number of new states (the biggest being Pakistan and India) resulted, by my estimate, in over 100 million refugees (all under UNHCR except for you know whom) of which 720,000 were from the Israeli conflict. So how many refugees are left in the world from those 100 million except for the Palestinians?  Come on, this is not a hard question and you know the answer already -- A BIG FAT ZERO. That's right nada.  In fact, a nice piece of the UN's budget is to deal with this ever growing issue of Palestinian refugees and that is how you get statements -- unchallenged -- that 70-80 percent of the Gaza strip, for example, are Palestinian refugees.

One absurd outcome from this disaster is that it is the stated position of the Palestinians that their own refugees will not be citizens of their own state!  Read this: http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Politics/2011/Sep-15/148791-interview-refugees-will-not-be-citizens-of-new-state.ashx#axzz38hcN82uj   since they have this absurd "right of return" and that they really belong in Israel. These people are invented refugees and now they won't even get full citizenship in their own invented country.  You can't make this stuff up.  There has been a ton written about this issue and I attended a conference on this a few years ago sponsored by the Middle East Forum under Dr. Daniel Pipes whose organization extensively researched and published  on this topic. Here is the best overview on the subject:   http://www.meforum.org/3344/unrwa-special.

I just got to mention that  this gets really bizarre around issues like the killing of Palestinians in "camps" in Syria. (These "refugee camps" all over the middle east are really towns today that are kept crowded and in poor condition so the population is hyped for "right of return". Hell, some of these camps even have large symbolic keys over the entrance gate emphasizing this right. http://mondoweiss.net/2010/01/beautiful-resistance-in-bethlehems-aida-refugee-camp.html) Are these displaced Palestians part of the UNHCR issue with the millions of other refugees in that conflict or are they being protected by UNRWA? You can imagine how confusing this must be for Palestinian activists since if UNRWA protects them it would impact their message that Israel is the source of all their suffering. So they are abandoned. http://rt.com/op-edge/palestine-conflict-syria-rebels-509/  (I used the mondoweiss website to show the picture of the key. The article is an example of this pathetic romanticizing of Palestinian refugees by the Left -- this website is quite disgusting but you need to know what your enemy thinks so I read this crap.)

One last thing about UNRWA and its impact on Gaza.  Nearly ALL the 30,000 employees of UNRWA  are Palestinians living there and since we know that 44% of the population voted for Hamas, what percentage of the employees are also members of Hamas? I don't know the answer for sure but it's a really big number. That could explain why UNRWA facilities have many Islamic teachers, perpetuate a culture of terror, death and hatred of Israel into the next generation and its facilities are often cover for terror activities for Hamas operatives.  I wonder what PTA night is like!  http://elderofziyon.blogspot.co.il/2014/07/unrwa-praised-smuggling-of-cement-into.html?m=1

http://elderofziyon.blogspot.co.il/2014/07/unrwa-supplies-found-in-terror-tunnel.html#.U9TmjGPiO4Z

I get really worked up over this because refugees are one of the two main 3rd rail issues in this conflict -- the other being "occupation" and we see that the refugee issue is completely manufactured for maximum injury to Israel. You will see in my next blog that occupation is nearly as flimsy.

Take care

Too Powerful Not To Send Immediately

Dear Family and Friends:

Israel's Amb to the U.S. just took CNN to task for doing exactly what we have been talking about.  It is so powerful you really need to send this out.

http://edition.cnn.com/video/?/video/bestoftv/2014/07/24/exp-erin-intv-dermer-mideast-crisis-u-n-shelter-in-gaza-hit.cnn&video_referrer=

Please forward this so people understand context of what they are seeing on TV and the bias (and frankly the stupidity) of the media...  it's not the main issue of the interview but think about
1. prejudging without ANY facts and 2. that the IDF should send someone to look in the school.  I assume she has never seen a war before.  But the real issue here is context. Brilliant.

Thanks  Sam

PS  I also received this second piece on the whole lie about the UNRWA school related to this interview.

7/24/2014 - Update on life and Hamas as Islamic Fascism - It's Serious Friends

Dear Family and Friends:

I really appreciate you have been passing my emails around.  I now have posted all of them on this blog to make it easier to subscribe and send to others. If you send me a Google Circles invite you will receive an update notice automatically (I think that is how it works).

On a personal note, we are waiting for our daughter to give birth in the next 2 weeks (this is her #6, G-d willing) and our excitement is tinged with  the loss and heroism of our fighters (as I write this I see that Yair Ashkenazi, 36, is the 33rd soldier to die in battle defending our country http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4549845,00.html).  If we were really targeting civilians, these losses would be unnecessary - we would just lay waste to Gaza - but this is not our way.   I also notice that when you ask an Israeli "atah b'seder" -- "are you OK?" -- they always answer "b'seder gamur"  -- "I am totally alright".  They may then mention it's a tough time right now but you really see the remarkable resolve of my fellow citizens.  And even more left-of-center friends will say "now is not the time to discuss whatever issues I may have". Anyone who criticized our citizen army justifiably crosses a very clear social red line.

That is what makes it so beyond the pale when you hear of a very left NGO called "B'tzelem", for example,  petitioning the courts to allow an advertisement with the names of the children killed in Gaza to be read on Israeli radio (and trying to bypass the political influence laws regarding radio in Israel)! (http://www.jpost.com/Operation-Protective-Edge/BTselem-to-petition-High-Court-against-censorship-of-Gaza-dead-368888 -- these NGO's are supported, by and large, by European Union NGO's trying to influence/interfere with our society -- see NGO Monitor:  http://www.ngo-monitor.org/article/b_tselem -- shine a light on this!) Such chutzpah! No context -- why are these children dying?  Is it the Islamic one-party dictatorship committing war crimes by launching rockets to Israeli cities and the legitimate response by Israel -- where Hamas places rocket launchers in the middle of schools, hospitals and neighborhoods? Worse, we are not even sure which children are directly killed by a Hamas rocket -- we know of many instances of Hamas rockets landing on their own "people".

We are in a war of ideas -- freedom vs. dictatorship. Loving life vs a culture of death.  I just got this amazing video that presents this contrast clearly -- if you don't like republican politics, so ignore the end, but the message is so clear and powerful. http://www.truthrevolt.org/videos/bill-whittle-case-israel. After watching this video I wrote the following to my wonderful Christian friends: "I just saw this, and I swear to you, I started to cry.  I then got it.  Besides the unbelievable truth to what he says I now realize how alone I sometimes feel.  Like someone accidentally locked up in a psychiatric institution, and every time I protest my innocence, my docs suggest that my delusional issues are still not resolved!  So you give me comfort of knowing it's not me... Thank you and God Bless you all."

Please understand.  Israeli's take no pleasure out of children being killed.  Unlike our enemies, who dance, launch fireworks and hand out candies when there is a terrorist attack in Israel killing men, women and children, Israeli's do not take joy in this loss of life  of others.  But let's be clear that does not mean we should bear responsibility for these deaths.   Hamas, as I have written before, is cynically using the international press to produce photo ops for their propaganda purposes while their fighters and leadership hides underground. It is about Cause and Effect.  Here is a good read on the issue: http://edition.cnn.com/2014/07/21/opinion/oren-hamas-media-strategy/index.html?hpt=imi_c2.   In fact, the Foreign press is essentially a co-conspirators in this whole saga.  http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/cnn-bbc-and-the-like-are-responsible-for-civilian-deaths-in-gaza/

And the best piece is by a former BBC reporter has to say about it:   https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4_jLzgwVn7dXzFzUkdjVDVLVEk/edit?usp=sharingOr the direct intimidation of reporters who want to report the truth about civilians being used as human shields: http://www.jpost.com/Operation-Protective-Edge/Gaza-reporters-tweets-Hamas-using-human-shields-368689  What our enemies are trying to do is show examples of intimidation of reporters in Israel -- which is rare, not right and is dealt with immediately.  What the BBC fellow says is the bottom line: from Israel you can say what you want, from Gaza -- forget about it.

But I also don't think we should give a large part of the population of Gaza a free pass. Here is why. You must understand that 44% of Gaza's population VOTED for Hamas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_legislative_election,_2006)-- for two reasons: 1. because Fatah was corrupt (and still is and so is Hamas  http://www.jpost.com/Business/Business-Features/The-corruption-at-the-head-of-Hamas-363550) and 2. because Hamas' charter is to kill the Jews and take over Israel.  If you don't believe me, watch this celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Hamas in 2012 after the last battle we had with them.  http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-20655448 And this is from BBC -- not exactly our friends. How quickly the world forgets.  Look at the crowds. I must tell you it reminds me of Hitler gatherings.  I am trying to find a translation of the entire 3 hours of their anti-Semitic rant but if you know Arabic, have fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmz7k8NRqyQ .

So the analogy to Hitler has many dimensions.  First, here is a clip of a 1940 rally where Hitler decried Churchill's attack on German civilians -- I kid you not. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJcjXC3YRT8.  The parallel to what we are suffering in Israel is just so there. Hamas launches missiles and cries to the world that they are being attacked. I need to quote this from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blitz) : "7 September 1940 and 21 May 1941 there were major aerial raids (attacks in which more than 100 tonnes of high explosives were dropped) on 16 British cities. Over a period of 267 days (almost 37 weeks), London was attacked 71 times, Birmingham, Liverpool and Plymouth eight times, Bristol six, Glasgow five, Southampton four, Portsmouth and Hull three, and there was also at least one large raid on another eight cities. This was a result of a rapid escalation starting on 24 August 1940, when night bombers aiming for RAF airfields drifted off course and accidentally destroyed several London homes, killing civilians, combined with the UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill's immediate response of bombing Berlin on the following night. Starting on 7 September 1940, London was bombed by the Luftwaffe for 57 consecutive nights. More than one million London houses were destroyed or damaged, and more than 40,000 civilians were killed, almost half of them in London. Ports and industrial centres outside London were also heavily attacked. The major Atlantic sea port of Liverpool was also heavily bombed, causing nearly 4,000 deaths within the Merseyside area during the war..."  Hey, the Germans also felt wronged..yet we all know that Hitler was evil. Period. The fact that even a single Brit accepts Hamas attacking Israel is just plain anti-Semitic (this just happened the other day: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2014/07/23/british-mp-apologizes-for-tweet-saying-he-would-probably-fire-rockets-at-israel/.)  Thank God for the Iron Dome -- created after Hezbollah launched 4,000 missiles into the North in 2006 (some landing a few hundred feet from where I live in Rosh Pina)

Next dimension of comparison: Fascism.  We are having in the U.S. a major crisis of leadership and I hope this does not compromise future generations in terms of paying the piper.  It is amazing that 70 years after WW II we are, again, compromising with the evil of fascism which has now become mutated and is being directed as a radical Islamic ideology. This has become possible, in part, because Islam does not differentiate between religion and State in any way.  If one reads a basic definition of Fascism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism) it states, in part, "Fascists sought to unify their nation through an authoritarian state that promoted the mass mobilization of the national community and were characterized by having leadership that initiated a revolutionary political movement aiming to reorganize the nation along principles according to fascist ideology. Fascist movements shared certain common features, including the veneration of the state, a devotion to a strong leader, and an emphasis on ultranationalism and militarism. Fascism views political violence, war, and imperialism as a means to achieve national rejuvenation, and it asserts that stronger nations have the right to expand their territory by displacing weaker nations."

Sounds familiar? This directly relates to the way Islam views nationalism and the State as an extension of it ideology of religious supremacy.  Because it believes in this supremacy, especially in land formally captured in earlier times by expansionist Islamic/Arab rulers (for the most part this is connected to Arab culture, though not completely) it sees Israel (and Spain for that matter) as the first target of their wrath... oh, once they murder Muslims who do not adhere to their brand of theology!  That is why Hamas (and now ISIS) first went about killing their fellow Muslims who were not getting with the program. Hamas, as a branded part of the Muslim Brotherhood has this ideology as their world view and that it is why it is so dangerous.  Obama pandered to MB when he gave his Cairo speech and he is an enabler of  MB's continued attempt to export this ideology throughout the world (MB is aligned with a number of Muslim countries, most notably our NATO "ally" Turkey and, host of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), Qatar) . Our ability to fight this evil first requires us to name it for what it is.

Islam has a really dark side to it that is a petri-dish for fascism, terrorism, antisemitism, anti-Christian, anti-women ...  actually, anti anything Western.  and they are loud and there are a lot of them and the Muslim world overall is cowered into allowing this.  and the underlying virus vector is within the Arab Muslim world which adds very primitive aspects of Arab social dysfunction into the Muslim mix. (Honor and shame is key to this problem. Here is an excellent short overview of the issue: http://www.jewishmediaresources.com/1703/the-high-costs-of-ignoring-islamic-culture)  And we cannot simply put the issue into a structure of:  let's not forget the good Muslims -- it is certainly true they exist ... but we have a major enemy in fascist Islam even if there are good Muslims out there.  we had an enemy in fascist Nazism even if there were  good Christian Germans out there.  In the end, we needed to carpet bomb most of Germany to defeat this enemy and I am sure good Christian Germans died in the mix.  But the infection was too powerful to differentiate.  Fascist Islam is an enemy we need to defeat and it usually takes a lot of pain in Western democracies until it wakes up to the seriousness of the problem. Generating consensus in liberal societies is both our strength and our weakness.    It's not about prejudice -- its about a war of ideologies and the Western world is in deep trouble over this.   one other thing that makes this Muslim problem worst for us now is that not only must we be dealing with Fascist Islam, we must also deal with their internal struggle between various breeds of radical Sunni Islam trying to kill each other and us (the battle is being reduced - for our benefit - to the battle between pro-Muslim Brotherhood of Qatar and Turkey and anti-MB of Egypt and Saudi Arabia though it is so much more complex since there are variations of a theme that regards even these "righteous" Sunni's as heretics -- note: ISIS, for example and their new Caliphate in Syria/Iraq) and the Sunni-Shiite divide and all the variations therein.  Boy, what a mess. at least during  WW II we did not also have major battles between Catholics and Protestants.  They had, more or less, already had their fill of murder and mayhem during the prior century or so!

There is much more I want to write but this blog is getting long again.  So let me leave you with this story.

Life here does have it's ironies.  Last night Meryl and I went to a concert of Beri Sakharof - a famous rock guitarist in Israel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upU4G6Zstf0).  It was held in Kibbutz Yiron in the parking lot of the Galill Winery maybe 2 miles from the Lebanese border (I wonder if Hezbollah was dancing to his music as well :)). The head of the municipality, co-sponsors of the event, spoke of these difficult times and he brought up the discussion whether to have the concert or not and it was decided that it was important for Israelis to continue LIFE.  Then he praised our soldiers -- in fact, the promoters invited any reservists in the area to attend the concert at no charge and this garnered the only significant applause.  I am such a mush I was crying. It was so powerful. And then Beri got up to play -- please remember he is totally secular. His band had more dreadlocks than a Bob Marley concert and he said that he wants to start the concert with a song dedicated to our soldiers in the field -- may G-d bless them (yes, he used the word El, which is G-d - twice) -- and then they played a rendition of the 121st Psalm  -- the acoustic version by the artist who wrote this beautiful melody is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CV9ivKPTf8.  Of course the author of this Psalm is actually my #1 hero, King David - poet, fighter, lover and builder of the first Commonwealth of Israel nearly 3,000 years ago.

A couple of things before I leave you:  1.  this is the soul of Israel and why I love the country and its people, warts and all 2.  he did not sing a song about death to the Arabs (something I am sure would have been chanted at a Hamas concert regarding Jews) 3. deep in the soul of Israel - secular or religious - is this deep sense of faith and purpose -- in fact, Israel has one of the highest beliefs in God for any Western country even though more than half the country is not "religious" at all; 4. these verses were written in ISRAEL 3,000 YEARS AGO.  Please tell me, who are the indigenous people in this conflict.  A hint to my next missive.

Shir La ma"alot Psalms Song of Ascents

1. A song of ascents. I lift my eyes to the mountains-from where will my help come? 2. My help will come from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth. 3. He will not let your foot falter; your guardian does not slumber. 4. Indeed, the Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. 5. The Lord is your guardian; the Lord is your protective shade at your right hand. 6. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7. The Lord will guard you from all evil; He will guard your soul. 8. The Lord will guard your going and your coming from now and for all time.

Take care and our prayers to all those fighting for our freedom.

Threatening Reporters Willing to Tell the Truth in Gaza. Lies about Casualty Figures

We met when I was a speaker on high tech at an investment forum in London a year back or so. Thank you for being so clearly in support of Israel especially when we see the hypocrisy of organizations as the HRC with one sided condemnations by countries with some of the worst human rights records on the planet.

You know that Hamas is explicitly using human shields and intentionally firing from within hospitals, schools and homes.  And the international press, if it wants to keep in the good graces of the dictatorship, enables this by one sided and false reporting.  If they are inclined to report the truth, which is rare, they are attacked by Hamas (see today's J-Post: http://www.jpost.com/Operation-Protective-Edge/Gaza-reporters-tweets-Hamas-using-human-shields-368689).
A bigger issue to bring to your attention and, which is not being focused on by our allies, is that the CNN, BBC, The Times, even many Israeli websites are constantly quoting the "UN says"  that "70 to 80" percent of the Gaza deaths are civilians.  This makes the percentage look like it is an official figure when you and I know it is coming from the Hamas controlled "Ministry of Health".  It's pure propaganda and needs to be called-out for what it is. The figure is no more than 50% and, may be much lower. How do we know? Since Al Jazerra publishes the age and sex of every person killed in the conflict we know a lot. The number of children is being overplayed, the number of women is being overplayed and about 50% (assuming no women are involved in the fighting) are fighting age males.  Here is one of the links. -http://www.algemeiner.com/2014/07/15/watchdog-al-jazeeras-gaza-fatalities-data-indicates-israel-killed-mostly-combatant-age-males-not-women-or-children/.

But the best evidence came out yesterday, when Pilay stated that
600 Palestinians were killed, including at least 147 children and 74 women (UN human rights chief: 'Strong possibility' of Israeli war crimes in Gaza | The Times of Israel http://www.timesofisrael.com/un-human-rights-chief-strong-possibility-of-israeli-war-crimes-in-gaza/#ixzz38MYN2q19) Do the math - 37%.  The rest are fighting age males, dressed as civilians, based upon directives by Hamas to make all casualties look like civilians to the press (they even publish this on their website).  I hope you can speak of this when you are interviewed.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks  Sam

7/22/2014 - My Third Set of Observations

Dear Family and Friends:  (please feel free to pass around -- If you are new and want my first two updates, please let me know -- also if you want off the list)

If you live in Israel you are totally glued to the news.  It is an overwhelming feeling of pensiveness -- not gloom, but a subdued pensiveness (it is perfectly described in this op-ed: http://www.timesofisrael.com/hushed-determined-israel-in-a-war-for-our-home/). There is a quiet respect as people go about their business for those in our thoughts in the midst of battle defending our country. Whom else will fall in battle? Calling friends with family in the IDF to check on them. Looking at pictures of our fallen heroes and seeing if you recognize a face or name. One death just announced is from my friend's community, Hosahya -- they have known many losses since this is a very Zionist village in the Lower Galilee and many go into fighting units -- and he has the same name as our son, Oren.  I even checked to see if I knew one of the fallen on Linked-in: he looked like many of my high-tech colleagues.  I was relieved he was not in my network and then felt guilty for that feeling. I just heard that one soldier is MIA and knowing the disregard for human life that characterizes Hamas towards their own population, I worry deeply for him. The IDF sets up a field hospital for wounded Gaza-ins -- I doubt the same is accorded our citizens.
As I wrote one of my Christian friends in Texas: "I am quite sad right now.  the whole country is very subdued losing so many brave young men.  Because we are a citizen's army defending ourselves close to home (the war is a 3 hour drive from my house though I live "far away") everyone feels it.  And the sense of worldwide antisemitism is scary -- it is a herpes-like virus that is always present though not necessarily manifest (what does chanting "kill the Jews" have to do with a war in Israel). The level of antisemitism in the Arab Muslim community is extraordinary but not unexpected.  A poorly publicized fact is that many Arab states sided with the Nazi's during WW II and the head (Grand Mufti) of the Palestinian community lived with Hitler in Berlin and recruited Bosnian Muslims as SS soldiers. He was also planning concentration camps in Israel after, he thought, the Nazi's would win."  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relations_between_Nazi_Germany_and_the_Arab_world) I forgot to mention to my friend that this anti-Semitic leader of the Palestinians, Haj Amin al-Husseini is today lauded by Palestinians as a national hero.

We have a concept here called "lone soldiers". They are people (not all necessarily Jews, though many are) who come to serve 3 years in the IDF. They have no family here so the IDF has a special program to create a support network and "family" for them.  It is a great example of the human quality to our Army.  One lone soldier just died in battle and there was a fear expressed by his family in the States that few would come to his funeral since he is alone. Get this: over 20,000 people showed up to his funeral due to a quick notice on Facebook and a connection to the fact it became known he was a fan of a certain soccer team.  Amazing. (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4547994,00.html).

For a very powerful first person account of what is going on from the former President of the Weizmann Institute of Science, I have attached his letter below.

Let me give you some of my most recent observations:

We also feel that the playbook used by Hamas, as I described in my last email, to place their civilians in harms way as a religious and social imperative puts Israel at a great disadvantage. (http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/21/opinion/oren-hamas-media-strategy/)  ( I have also attached a WSJ the article since it needs a subscription to access on-line). You may also see this from Palestinian Media Watch: http://palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=12117.  And the press is totally complicit in this farce and give strength to the efforts by Hamas to risk civilians.  Constant quoting from "Palestinian Health Sources in Gaza" -- of numbers of Palestinians killed or quoting from the "unbiased" U.N. that 70% are civilian is a total lie and you need to write to your local papers to start contextualizing that these numbers are completely biased in order to put pressure on Israel to stop defending itself. Here are some relevant analysis: http://www.algemeiner.com/2014/07/21/al-jazeera-publishes-updated-list-of-gaza-dead-analysis-confirms-israel-tageting-combatants/ and
http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_context=3&x_outlet=16&x_article=2759. And the pièce de résistance are instructions that Hamas openly publish on how to up the civilian numbers: (http://www.truthrevolt.org/israel-revolt/hamas-instructing-people-how-lie-about-civilian-casualties).

I just checked on Wikipedia how many civilians were killed in just the first month of the U.S. invasion in Iraq (March 2003) - it was 3,977!, and April it was 3,437  (I attached the table of civilian casualties by month throughout the Iraqi war). This was just for starters. And the level of civilian casualties due to NATO bombing during the Bosnian crisis, between 1,200 and 5,700, were described as a necessary evil by NATO spokespeople at the time.  I can't help but feel the anti-Semitic aspect of what is going on with Israel on this score.  Between the misrepresentation of civilian casualties in Gaza, the participation of the press in this fraud (even if they are not biased, which many are, against Israel, they need to offer the Hamas party line as fact)  and the sheer effort on the IDF's part to keep civilian casualties down in spite of the use of civilians as human shields -- you have to ask yourself what is really going on.  But each of you can make a difference by being a messenger of the facts and shed light to your friends and colleagues on what is really going on and write letters to the press -- constantly.
I am most depressed right now regarding Obama's and Kerry's attempt to interfere in a way completely unhelpful to Israel.  It was reflected in the bizarre comments by his Kerry's staff last night on the way to Egypt.   They were lamenting that the situation is more "complicated" than in 2012. (http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/07/21/us-palestinians-israel-kerry-idUSKBN0FQ1WF20140721)  That is code for saying, "we liked the Muslim Brotherhood in charge of Egypt" so it would be simpler to control Hamas and add to that Bibi's abject surrender by apologizing to Turkey for their terrorism on the high seas as dictated by Obama during his visit and you get a clear sense that something is seriously amiss with Obama and the State Depart and that Obama is playing with real fire here (we should never forget what he did with his Cairo speech -- this is but a continuation -- by elevating the Muslim Brotherhood during his "Islam reset" speech) and that Israel needs to decide whether it needs to "out" the U.S. on the subterfuge.  I have not slept in days. I am exhausted worrying about the type of pressure the U.S. exerts by suggesting that if we do not behave the U.S. will throw us to the European and U.N. wolves.  This is too important and the Muslim Brotherhood must be defeated now.  We MUST defeat this anti-Semitic, fascist, murderous, dictatorial regime.  We may never have this window like this again and we have already paid a high price in the deaths of our son's and brother's to allow their memory to be sacrificed on the alter of political expediency.
This battle between Egypt and Saudi Arabia (and other Sunni countries) who know how murderous and dangerous the Muslim Brotherhood is, which includes Hamas as one of it's off springs, and Turkey and Qatar who are the MB's big supporters on the other side is a serious issue that the U.S is completely out of its depth to understand or control.  When you add to that Iran's desire to support arch-enemy Sunni Hamas in order to destabilize Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other Sunni countries, you realize that there is a big picture going on and that Hamas should get no support, regardless of how many pictures of dead babies (including many pictures taken from other conflicts) Hamas tries to use to influence U.S. opinion. http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/a-war-made-in-iran/
http://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2014/07/19/irans_fingerprints_all_over_hamasisrael_conflict.html

Lastly, it is once in a while a relief to watch a show where someone tells it like it is: Bill Maher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1zzlXleHU4.  The best part of the show is when he talks about the "professional" refugee status of Palestinians towards the end of the clip.  Given what is going on in Iraq, Syria and many other places in the world where refugees are be manufactured by the millions, you got to ask yourself whether antisemitism again plays a role in this one-sided story (of course it does --"that shitty little country Israel"... as a French diplomat referred to us. “Why,” he asked, “should the world be in danger of World War Three because of those people?” (http://www.tomgrossmedia.com/ShittyLittleCountry.html)).  Thank you Bill.
I thought I was going to have space to discuss more about Arab/Muslim culture in the Middle East, but this email is already a little long. I just want to refer you to an acquaintance of mine who is an extraordinary ME scholar and reads/writes/speaks all the local languages: Dr. Harold Rhode (http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/biography/Harold+Rhode). All his writings are powerful and very educational: here is just one example but you can peruse the Gatestone Institute for more information. http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/3844/honor-compromise-middle-east.  This Institute has tons of information on what really happens on this side of the Globe.  Another of my favorites is a Journalist who spends most of his time talking to his colleagues in the Arab world -- without attribution, of course. Since he is a Palestinian Muslim who lives in Jerusalem and gets the issues big time is http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/author/Khaled+Abu+Toameh.  As you read about this culture, about honor, compromise, intimidation, strong-horse, etc., you need to understand that it's very hard to speak the truth in that part of the world. It's more like Russia under Stalin.  It's not just physical threats but the threat of social ostracization which is very shameful for Arabs. And Westerners just don't get it -- I was watching a BBC interview this morning and a Gaza-ian said: we would rather not go with Hamas -- but that is dangerous for us.  And the reporter let that pass without a comment in her summing up.  Of course, she wants access and is willing to pay the price by being complicit with the dictatorship of thought and ideology.

Regardless of where you live please do your part to get the message out.
Thank you.
Sam/Shmuel

7/18/2014 - My second set of observations

Dear Family and Friends  (please feel free to pass this along):

I would like to provide a personal update as well as focus on a number of important ideas now that our IDF has entered Gaza last night. If anyone chooses not to receive an update, please let me know.
Meryl and I are OK though we feel the stress.  I see it a lot with the grand-kids. They talk about violence and killing.  It is very disturbing.  You also can feel it in the air even though Israelis are known for trying to keep life as normal as possible.  For example, I did ride with my road cycle group this morning even though we first talked about what to do if there is a Code Red.  I'm not sure my bike helmet is very protective from a missile attack and quite a few missiles were aimed at the area where we cycle. You also think more about where to drive to avoid areas where there could be rock or Molotov cocktails being thrown though overall the violence by Arabs (only Muslims, by the way, and it is interesting to see the Arab Christian community being very apart from their Muslim counterparts - but that is for another missive) is minimal.  Life goes on.  I also have a bunch of friends whose sons are now fighting in Gaza and we all pray for them.

As Israel adhered to a self-imposed cease-fire on Tues (while rockets continued to rain down on Israeli cities) and a "humanitarian cease fire" yesterday (which was also violated by terrorists in Gaza), it became clear to everyone that we would need to enter Gaza to deal, first and foremost, with the tunnels leading into towns and kibbutzim along the boarder with Gaza.  Had the 13 terrorists who exited such a tunnel yesterday morning succeeded in entering Kibbutz Sufa  http://www.timesofisrael.com/tunnel-infiltration-thwarted-near-kibbutz-sufa/, we would have had a mass casualty event -- and maybe that would have encouraged the New York Times, left wing agitators and an assortment of anti-Semites to update their scorecards as I discussed in the last email - I doubt it.  For Israel, it would have been a disaster and it was time to act against Hamas both for the firing of missiles -- nearly 2,000 so far -- as well as these tunnels.

On a personal basis, interactions with our Muslim Arab friends can be strained but I want to relate one quick story.  Our carpenter is an amazing craftsman as well as a wonderful human being.  When he came yesterday to deliver our reupholstered chairs he mentioned that he was fasting (along with his two workers) for Ramadan. Then ensued a fun conversation on the differences between Jewish and Muslim fasting. Of course, since he has lived with Jews his whole life he know that we wait until 3 stars are out to break our fast (or, I told him, 2 stars and one aircraft :). And that was it.  Of course, there were the things left unsaid and, were he alone, I would have asked him about his feelings, etc.  But the key is that the interaction was unremarkable.  And that is the way it should be.  So one of the key items I want to address is why Hamas and its distorted Islamic philosophy has taken hold.  It is easy to attribute it to Islam per say and, yes, horrible horrible things are being done in the name of Islam all over the Middle East today.  But the political ideology behind this is also extremely important to understand since the Palestinian "movement" was started by purely secular Arabs.  And only later was Islam grafted onto this murderous ideology to give it a patina of religious zeal since Islam was perfectly suited for this transformation.

The most powerful piece I have seen on this subject was just published in the Times of Israel (http://www.timesofisrael.com/the-tragic-self-delusion-behind-the-hamas-war/).  It's a read but worth your time if this issue interests you since I think he nails the underlying ideology perfectly. In a nutshell, from the days of Arafat, the premise of the PLO, Fatah and now Hamas is that Israel is a colonial enterprise and that like all anti-colonial movements, if they strike Israel enough times, the Zionists (they mean Jews) will decide it is not worth the cost, pick up and go home.  It is based upon the same revolutionary movements that threw the French out of Algeria and the French and Americans out of Indochina.  It finally explained to me the odd comment by the Hamas spokesperson recently that Hamas is willing to sacrifice as many martyrs as possible -- in fact, in Algeria 45,000 were killed in a single day. (here is the quote -- and the slip of the tongue that the spokesman made when he said that Hamas is intentionally leading their civilians to death...err, I mean, confrontation http://www.palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=12063)  But it was worth the sacrifice because the French, in the end, turned up their tails and left.

There is only one "slight"  problem with this ideological model, The French could go home -- but Israelis are indigenous to here and we have nowhere to go. So instead of these attacks weakening our resolve to the point we leave (to where I am not sure) it stiffens our resolve and unites us.  This is a fatal flaw in their ideology.  It also explains why 1. they are willing to direct the killing of their citizens (http://palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=12019) 2. they put almost no money in state building and -- and this is most important -- they invest enormous  national and intellectual energy (and so does Fatah, the PA and Abbas himself) that only the Palestinians -- a completely invented people and national identity (http://www.frontpagemag.com/2011/david-meir-levi/an-invented-people/) --  are the true indigenous people and the Jews are no roots here -- that there was no Jewish Kingdom -- King David was a fable; no Jewish Temple in Jerusalem; Jesus was a Palestinian, not a Jew, etc.  Under their current ideology they must say this even though you and I and any normal Jew or Christian knows this is a total fabrication.  Essentially, the Palestinians are stuck in a failed ideology now anchored in Islam. Here is an example of how this anti-colonialist theology becomes completely sick http://elderofziyon.blogspot.co.il/2014/07/arab-writer-justifies-rocket-terror-as.html#.U8TxQrHiO4Y  and btw Elders of Zion is a great resource: http://elderofziyon.blogspot.co.il. Due to Hamas' anti-colonialist theology, Leftist the world over support Palestinians and call for the elimination of Israel (in consort with the ultra-right, which does seem strange but when it comes to anti-Antisemitism this is doable) in spite of Israel's liberal, democratic society that does not hang gays, abuse women, restrict speech or demand religious loyalty -- all important issues for a typical Leftist ideology.  So the Left the world-over is stuck as well in a dysfunctional, diseased paradigm that is completely divorced from reality and is a historical artifact from Arafat's design.

The other thing I wanted to mention is this whole issue of Israel (really Jewish) power which I also alluded to in my last email.  If Israel wanted really target civilians with our military we could flatten Gaza and Algeria would look like a picnic.  270 dead "civilians" compared to what we could do (and the 270 civilian number is completely fabricated by Hamas people on the ground like in every battle we have with them -- that the majority of the casualties are fighting age males and that Hamas calls them civilians to up the casualty count as part of their PR strategy --http://www.algemeiner.com/2014/07/15/watchdog-al-jazeeras-gaza-fatalities-data-indicates-israel-killed-mostly-combatant-age-males-not-women-or-children/)  clearly proves we are avoiding civilians casualties (see this clip by Col. Richard Kemp testifying on Israel's conduct during wartime -- I have met him and he is a true hero to stand up to these false accusations at the UN: http://www.unwatch.org/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=bdKKISNqEmG&b=1313923&ct=7536409). So Israel is protecting civilians even as these Hamas fighters hide behind the skirts of civilians and Hamas launches, day after day, missiles into cities to kill as many civilians as they can.   Hamas first tells its population that it's good to die for Islam and the "cause", then it places them as human shields, then when civilians die, Hamas uses their deaths to piss off the West and feed the Left's and Arab propaganda machine.  It is such a  cynical use of human life yet  this is all you hear from the foreign media. http://www.algemeiner.com/2014/07/16/nothing-makes-hamas-happier-than-dead-palestinians/

I want to spend a moment on our worst enemy -- ourselves.  I mentioned last time Jewish Voice for Peace.  Another example of how dysfunctional and dangerous the Jewish Left has become are the writings of Gideon Levy of Haaretz. Take,  for example this reprehensible article (http://www.haaretz.com/opinion/1.605001) He spews this vitriol weekly.  Out of curiously, I wanted to know whether there were Jews supporting Hitler during the early days of WW II.  Yep!  Here are a few links. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_German_National_Jews and  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Naumann.

For all those who still read the drivel of the NYT I just want to show a simple example from an op-ed piece by Serge Schmemann, member of their Editorial Board: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/13/opinion/sunday/13serge.html?_r=0 . Bottom line, there is  no understanding of nuance in the Middle East and he uses Western concepts of "balance" as he sits comfortably in his office in Manhattan and writes these inane pieces while people, Jews included, read and think they are being enlightened about the Middle East. Just compare this to a recent piece by Liat Collins, the Editor of the International Jerusalem Post -- note the subtlety and balance. She is not blinded by political ideology so she is not confused by the facts!   http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Columnists/My-Word-Rockets-and-political-science    Please beware, The Times no longer reports news.. it is one big Left wing editorial.  Without mentioning names, the ex-husband of a dear friend, who is an award winning NYT author, told her (I paraphrase) "Look, I am as Left on Israel as it gets, but between us, believe me that Israel will never get a fair hearing at The Times. Period."  The Times is cooking up it's ME coverage.

Before I wrap up, let me mention a few tidbits for reflection.  This article on the more global issues confronting the Middle East and it's impact on our conflict is brilliantly presented in this piece: http://www.tabletmag.com/jewish-news-and-politics/177456/settlers-one-state-solution?all=1# Those who read it get extra credit :).

One of the issues for the Arab culture to also confront is how tactical they are.  Not strategic.  They have patience to wait out their enemies -- which is a strength, of course -- but that is a tactic.  I believe this has two impacts:  1. they do not consider strategies to build their societies (I see this a lot even from Jews coming from Arab countries -- appears to be a cultural issue) and 2. their leader are inept.  Boy are they inept. And if they are strategic, they are typically assassinated like Anwar Sadat.
Lastly, you will hear people say, you know, you make peace with enemies. Yep, that is true, but only after they have been completely defeated.  Look at the difference between WW II and the Korean conflict which is still going on.  Until our enemies accept their defeat -- they cannot move on, their "street" will continue to agitate for murder and we will be in this cycle of violence. I heard this first from Dr. Daniel Pipes http://www.danielpipes.org/. This leads me to the open letter I just penned to our about-to-depart President, Shimon Peres.
The open letter is below.

Have a wonderful weekend and may Israel be strong and fully defeat this murderous ideology.

Sam
________________________________________

Dear President Peres:
We have met a number of times at your conferences and I have been an admirer and deeply humbled by your many years of service to the State.
I must, however, ask you to reconsider your position regarding Mr. Abbas as it is out of synch with reality.  I know you speak often of being a dreamer and that is a wonderful quality, however, at the same time dreaming requires an adjustment to reality. You declared at yesterday's press conference with Mr. Blair: "President Abbas is not only a partner for Israel but is the best hope for the Palestinians for a future of stability, respect, independence and prosperity. He is a man of peace, a responsible leader."  A responsible leader? He called our measured actions to defend ourselves from terror rockets by Hamas -- actions you personally defended on CNN -- a "genocide" and then likened this to Auschwitz. ("It's genocide - the killing of entire families is genocide by Israel against our Palestinian people...What's happening now is a war against the Palestinian people as a whole and not against the factions” and he then declared “Shall we recall Auschwitz?”) This is not responsible. This is grotesque. This is incitement. Pure and simple.

Mr. Abbas is the leader of Fatah and the PA whose websites incites daily against Israel in the most murderous and hateful ways. He cannot hide from this. You know that.  Palestinian Media Watch, which tracks this constant hate speech in Arabic, is replete with these disgusting quotes. Just over the last week, the PA website stated that Jews' God demands: "Passover Matzah made from the blood of our children" (http://www.palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=12004) or Fatah to Israelis in Hebrew: "Death will reach you from the south to the north... The KN-103 rocket is on its way toward you" (http://palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=11964). He is their leader yet not a peep. And differentiating between the PA and Fatah is a fiction.  And you and I know that he is not even democratically elected.  And you and I know that his family and friends personally benefit from his position for financial gain.  He is not a partner for peace. He says wonderful platitudes to gain international recognition and incites on a regular basis in Arabic.  I wish we would stop making excuses for what he supports either through words or silence.  Please.

So let's try a test. Let's see if he will not only retract his latest incitement of genocide/Auschwitz and say he is wrong. Let him declare he will dismantle the hate machine he condones within Fatah and the PA.  While we are at it, let him visit the families of murdered teens, Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar  and Naftal Frenkel, by his coalitions partners the way you, Mr. Peres tried to visit the family of Mohammed Abu Khdeir.   He cannot. He will not.  I believe, in your heart, you know that already.

One last thing.  When you hosted the summer camp for kids escaping the missiles in the South you were at a loss to explain why hostilities have escalated in Gaza given the bad economic shape of the people there.  President Peres, we all know the reason why they do this and it is a immoral and corrupt connection to radical Islam which calls for the destruction of Israel no matter the price and the creation of a culture of murder and death in their society.  You have, thank God, been around long enough to know this is the issue throughout the Middle East. It infects Hamas, and, I am sorry to say, it infects Fatah and the PA and therefore Mr. Abbas.
Please be honest to the world about what is really happening here.  The world trusts you and you have the credibly to set the record straight.  Maybe, at one time, your support for Mr. Abbas made sense. But let's call a spade a spade.  Genocide -- Auschwitz.  He has crossed a red line that even you should not accept in your dreams.

I hope you receive these words with respect and admiration for all you have done.

Thank you.

7/14/2014 - First Observations

To family and friends:

I have been getting lots of emails asking if things are ok and I thought I should send this quick update plus some reference information if you are interested.  thank you for your concerns.
first of all, we are fine.  Thank God for the ingenuity of Israel and the Jewish people with the Iron Dome.  It has, first of all, protected Israel from serious casualties. Nearly 1,000 missiles have been launched so far with almost no direct casualties.  Of course, with the sick world needing to compare #'s as if this is how you measure who is right and wrong, you would think Israel is almost doing something wrong protecting itself. (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/07/11/numbers-don-t-tell-the-mideast-story.html) As our Prime Minister says, Hamas uses people to protect their rockets and Israel uses rockets to protect their people. Also, Hamas has their fighters and leaders in the bunkers and civilians outside, while Israel does the opposite.  Just sick.   But its more than that -- Hamas promotes a perverted form of Islam that has become commonplace throughout the Middle East that focuses on a culture of death. (http://www.commentarymagazine.com/2014/07/13/palestinian-delusions-fuels-conflict-hamas-israel-gaza/)  If you read the interviews of Arabs, including from East Jerusalem, they speak openly about this lust for death.  Their problem  does remind me of  Emperor Worship and the Kamikaze death cult of WW II (I wrote a short piece on this below).  Meanwhile, we have been so careful about keeping casualties to a minimum that even the PA's representative to the UN says so (he will probably regret this interview: http://www.timesofisrael.com/palestinian-un-rep-says-every-gaza-missile-a-crime-against-humanity/)

Hamas, is a fascist-Islamic terror dictatorship dedicated to the murder of all Jews (not just Israeli's -- as you may read their Charter below). Our Iron Dome has given Israel the time and ability to determine how to best deal with Hamas.  Isi Liebler really summarizes a lot of my feelings on the subject in this excellent article in the J-Post today as well as our how we feel about Obama and his ilk running U.S. foreign policy:
http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Columnists/Candidly-speaking-Obamas-ongoing-shameful-behavior-against-Israel-362630

So, don't go so nuts about what you read.  You need to expect this stuff from the Liberal press and their supporters.  (The New York Times is so out to lunch -- it has become macabre -- it oozes conceit and moral equivalence with every article. And skews the coverage for their own agenda (http://www.newrepublic.com/article/118605/new-york-times-israel-editorial-was-hack-job)
. But the worst part is a complete lack of understanding of the culture and mimes of the Middle East led by the #1 apologist for Obama's policies here: Tom Friedman -- who, when the scorecard will comes in, will show he was wrong almost every time) They cannot process the reality in order to fit it into their bizarre world-view.

The only impact of the war (it is a war -- and it is serious) was that Meryl and I were eating dinner with a bunch of our grandkids on Thurs. in Jerusalem when there was a code red and we had about 30 seconds to get to a shelter.  Somehow i did not make it (they did) and i was able to see the Iron Dome take out the rockets over the residential area where we live.  Sarah, our grand daughter -- being now very clingy (of course) said to me she did not want to die -- 9 years old.  and that is terrorism by definition.  it is not one mans terrorist is another man's freedom fighter here because one needs only read the charter of Hamas. it is essentially an antisemitic diatribe against all Jews (not Israelis). Christians will be next on their list.    The Charter of Fatah, who Abbas is the President, is pretty bad as well.  (you will see a lot of stuff from Fatah -- the whole "moderate" tag to Abbas is a whitewash by maintaining two separate organizations -- a complete farce and fiction that even many Israeli's don't get.)  Here is just one example of Abbas's Fatah organization (which is also firing missiles at us from Gaza -- I would think this is a war crime by Abbas, no? http://palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=12004. PMW is an excellent resource to see what they say to each other in Arabic.  Forget the English crap for world consumption.  It's what they say to their people that counts.  Anyway, here is the charter for Hamas.  http://www.thejerusalemfund.org/www.thejerusalemfund.org/carryover/documents/charter.html?chocaid=397.

I just hope that we can sustain the pressure from all those world special interests, including the U.S., to ensure an DE-militerized Gaza.  And a deal to withdraw from Judea and Samaria -- you've got to be kidding.  Oh, btw, i was wondering today how may Palestinians have been killed in Syria -- over 2,000!  not a peep from anyone. I wonder why.  This source is theirs, not ours:
http://www.islamicnewsdaily.com/country/gulf/syria/over-2000-palestinians-have-died-in-syrian-war/

I have left a few other tidbits below.

Hope you are okay.  For all those Jews embarrassed by our power, (such as J-Street and their ilk, but the worst offender in my mind is Jewish Voice for Peace (http://jewishvoiceforpeace.org/) -- you can't make this stuff up -- I invite them to our life as Jews just 70 years ago as our grandparents were being murdered in Europe.  I like the power approach much better!! And, when I get a little depressed how we are viewed in the world, I just turn on Pat Condell - https://www.youtube.com/user/patcondell.

All the best,
Sam/Shmu
PS    feel free to forward to whomever (unless the politics makes you uncomfortable :))

A few more tidbits:

On Hamas and the cult of death:   I been thinking  about Hamas and this cult of death and it hit me yesterday that there is a very close parallel -- Japanese Emperor Worship before and during WW II.  I thought about it due to a video clip from Hamas that was made for propaganda purposes (it has a nice beat). https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=HiUWgWjL24U    In the video, you have these guys fighting with the bandanas on their helmets.  It knew it looked familiar and then I realized that the Japanese Kamikaze did the same thing.  Then I thought about their cult of death and Emperor worship and I believe there are many, many similarities. Fascism requires these types of mimes.

As we lived in Japan and my dad was very involved in Japanese culture when he was a Jewish Chaplain for the USAF in Japan when the US still had a major presence and there was still a little of the hangover from WW II in the country.  The whole honor thing is similar as well.  The major difference that I can see that there is a very strong cultural idea of loss of face in Japan which allowed the Japanese to accept their fate and emerge from WW II a strong nation.  The Arab culture does not have that motif.

On Obama's decision to create a make-believe Islam:  one of the very bad things under the current admin was to strike the use of the words "radical", "extreme", for example, from the word Islam.  It has been an attempt to placate groups with major hidden agendas around radical Islam to curtail any debate about the Islamic issues in this war.  the Charter dispels this denial, for example.

Here is a CNN piece that accidentally showing the Israel side:  I love what the guard says:   what says is the key.. how we treat Israeli civilians vs Hamas.  it is so right on.  like Hitler in the bunker.   This radical Islam is out of control --

Here are some resources you can use to better understand what is going on here and they speak for themselves.
general news:  www.jpost.com and timesofisrael.com

http://www.palwatch.org/  - they translate Arabic websites of the Palestinians so one can read what they are really saying (not what they say to the West)

http://www.camera.org/  they monitor how the liberal/left press distorts the ME coverage for political purposes.  The NYT takes the prize, btw.
www.algemeiner.com  they are a good compliment for in-depth news to the Jerusalem Post.

www.dailyalert.org  This is a good comprehensive resource of what is going on world wide in terms of Israel and antisemitism, which after almost 70 years, is a major problem in Europe (couched as anti-Zionism) and has metastasized in the Arab world into rampant anti-antisemitism.  Just see what happened yesterday and today in France. A local person who experienced this, called it a kristallnacht.

http://www.drudgereport.com/  boy does he nail it time after time.
my friend is writing this good blog on interesting issues: http://firstonethrough.wordpress.com/

and for a really good understanding of Islam and the issues surrounding this, try: http://www.danielpipes.org/
